cd-brain-damage-short-cuts
Brain Damage - Short Cuts [CD]

Short Cuts is a more or less direct reference to The Residents' famous Commercial Album (1980). Like the mythical American band, Brain Damage here develops a reflection on urgency, frustration, and intensity: everything must be said in a minimum of time. For this, none of the 24 tracks on this project will exceed two minutes in length. This is a rather atypical direction for this band, still labeled electro-dub, even if the range of styles represented here has further expanded compared to previous albums. In Short Cuts, we progressively move from a "Floydian" psychedelic folk to a kind of minimal electro-techno, via enigmatic trip-hop, without forgetting the digital dub that contributed to the duo's reputation on their first two albums. If once again, for this fourth album, we find Brain Damage where we least expected them, some choices remain constant, such as preserving the cerebral and ambient side of studio experiments, in opposition to the raw and sensory energy released in concert. On stage, the tracks from this "zapping" project, deliberately amputated, will be more extensively developed over time... Once again, Brain Damage surrounds itself in Short Cuts with a host of vocal guests. "Spoken word" plays a prominent role, presented here in seven languages: French, English, Bosnian, Catalan, Polish, Arabic, and German. We naturally find Black Sifichi, a permanent guest, accompanied by Real Fake MC, who was already present on High Tone's Wave Digger album, Mohammed El Amraoui (Morocco) and Giovanni Marks (USA), already present on Spoken Dub Manifesto, as well as artists met by the duo during their recent tours in Eastern European countries: Priest Maken (Joint Venture Sound System-Poland), or Asmir Sabic (Vuneny-Bosnia). We also note the presence of Angeline Bouille, a multifaceted lyrical singer, as well as an astonishing freshness brought by Lamija, a 6-year-old girl from Sarajevo. Finally, for the first time on a Brain Damage album, the French language is represented, thanks to the presence of Mika, singer of the amazing band Pusse, for a devastating text not devoid of humor, in the form of a manifesto, at the very end of the album.
