Before becoming a benchmark in French dub, High Tone was a bubbling sound laboratory. Released in 2001 on Jarring Effects’ Bass Temperature is not a classic album but a compilation of three foundational EPs by the group, released between 1998 and 2001. An immersion into the evolution of the Lyon sound, between deep bass, hallucinatory textures, and sharp beats.
The disc opens with the EP Bass Temperature and its iconic Echo Logik, where a sample from the film Little Big Man blends with a hypnotic groove. Train to TranSylvania conjures a cinematic universe populated by specters, with dub builds and dark steppa flourishes.
With Low Tone (1999), the band refines its identity: The Orientalist and Hempro 905 create hazy atmospheres with ethnic accents, while N°1 Station flirts with techno. Finally, Bot Bud Season (1998), the band's first release, explodes with raw energy. A special mention to Dubiously, a truly devastating dub missile that is still impactful today.
Bass Temperature is an essential time capsule, tracing the roots of a band that has consistently explored new sonic territories ever since. A must-have for experimental dub enthusiasts.
