Before becoming a benchmark in French dub, High Tone was a bubbling sound laboratory. Released in 2001 on Jarring Effects, Bass Temperature is not a classic album but a compilation of three founding EPs by the group, released between 1998 and 2001. An immersion into the evolution of the Lyon sound, between deep bass, trippy textures and sharp beats.
The album opens with the EP Bass Temperature and its emblematic Echo Logik, where a sample from the film Little Big Man blends with a hypnotic groove. Train to TranSylvania conjures a cinematic universe populated by specters, with rising dub and dark steppa flights.
With Low Tone (1999), the band refined their identity: The Orientalist and Hempro 905 create misty atmospheres with ethnic touches, while N°1 Station flirts with techno. Finally, Bot Bud Season (1998), the band's first release, explodes with raw energy. Special mention goes to Dubiously, a true dub missile still devastating today.
Bass Temperature is an essential time capsule, tracing the roots of a band that has since continued to explore new sound territories. A must-have for experimental dub.
